Summary

This article argues that supervisors should invest more in average performers rather than focusing the majority of resources on the top performers. The article reasons that top performers are already self-motivated and bottom performers may take too many invested resources to see progress, whereas middle performers constitute the majority of the workforce and are likely the most sensitive to extrinsic motivators such as praise and recognition. The article concludes by recommending that employers take time to encourage, support, appreciate, and celebrate the accomplishments of middle-performing employees.
