APA Organizational Excellence Award

This national-level recognition, given to a single company each year, is designed to highlight the effective application of psychology in the workplace — whether addressing mental health, applying good behavioral science to safety practices, using learning theory to strengthen training efforts, or a host of other ways that psychology can promote well-being and performance.

2018 Winner – Marriott International

APA recognized Marriott for its comprehensive employee training and development efforts that are informed by psychological research and theory. Marriott’s training and career development initiatives are ingrained in the corporation’s employee well-being program, which reaches 700,000 people on six continents who wear the Marriott name badge. Company human resource executives, who are led by a team of industrial-organizational psychologists, developed a program of personalized learning that has blended psychological research, evidence-based learning modalities, psychology-informed assessments and data analysis into the design, content and evaluation of training programs. Marriott has adapted its training to fit the needs of associates (such as offering shorter, digital, micro-learning opportunities) and pressing issues, such as a recent effort to train all associates at every level of the company in how to identify and respond to signs of human trafficking on its properties. 2017 Winner – Prudential Financial

APA recognized Prudential Financial for its efforts to promote psychological well-being for its employees, as well as its work to destigmatize mental health issues within its own work culture and beyond. Prudential’s comprehensive employee health strategy includes five components: physical, financial, spiritual, social and emotional. While all five are considered equally important, the emotional component has been regarded as key to the company’s efforts to raise awareness of mental health issues, remove barriers associated with stigma, and encourage meaningful dialogue. The company put into place a dedicated behavioral health services team that offers counseling, referrals, and training to help employees and supervisors better manage mental or emotional health concerns. A companywide Health Risk Assessment taken by employees has demonstrated that their efforts are showing success: Each year since the first assessment in 2007, the risk factors for stress and depression have steadily declined. 2015 Winner – American Express

APA selected American Express as the inaugural winner of its new Organizational Excellence Award, a national recognition designed to highlight the effective application of psychology in the workplace. Through its Healthy Minds program, American Express has taken broad steps to integrate behavioral health and emotional well-being into its health and wellness offerings, including expanding its employee assistance program, addressing stigma and providing a wealth of resources for employees. These efforts are bolstered by a powerful blend of peer-reviewed science, evidence-based practices, professional partnerships for quality resources and services, pilot testing and rigorous evaluation to deliver the best and broadest range of resources and information to its geographically and culturally diverse workforce.
